About Mrs. Mac
This blog was begun in the fall of 2008, and is about my middle School Library Teacher position at Pollard Middle School in Needham, Massachusetts. It contains comments about exciting new books, school wide activities students have done or are doing, and things that are happening in the classrooms related to the library. Since the school library is the “hub” of school life, what better way to show it than through a Library Blog?
In her Professional life, Alma Ramos-McDermott (Mrs. Mac) was the Chair of YALSA’s Diversity Taskforce from 2008-2010. She was also the co-chair of REFORMA’s CAYASC from 2009-2011, and served as a Committee Member of the AASL Diversity in the Organization Taskforce in 2008. She is currently REFORMA’s liaison to YALSA.
From 2010-2011, Mrs. Mac was the only School Librarian chosen to be on the National 2010 Pura Belpre Award Selection Committee, which chose the best book in the United States written or illustrated by a Latino/a for a Latino/a audience.
Mrs. Mac also serves as a Book Reviewer for the Young Adult Division for the state of Massachusetts and for REFORMA’s National Newsletter. She has written articles for YALSA’s national magazine, for the AASL’s national magazine, and was chosen as a March DIA Dynamo by author Pat Mora for her work with Dia de Los Libros/Dia de los Jovenes (Day of Books/Day of Youth.) Mrs. Mac was the only School Librarian chosen for her work celebrating Día every year with Pollard’s 7th & 8th grade Spanish class students. She is also featured in the newly released books “El Día de Los Niños/El Día de los Libros: Building a Culture of Literacy in Your Community Through Día, by Jeanette Larson as well as “Cybrarian Extraordinare: Compelling Information Literacy Instruction” by Felicia A. Smith.
When not blogging, teaching or writing Mrs. Mac likes to run, race and sing (not necessarily in that order).
